Upward and Onward We Shall go: The Pride of Barbados
13th November, 2012In notion of Independence month Loop Barbados has decided to compose a weekly post to celebrate the freedom of our island and all those individuals who made our liberty, pride and industry not only possible but also prominent.
We decided to start this month with the unique 'Pride of Barbados'. Our very own national flower, blooms year round and are the colours of the Tropical sunset. With shades of red, orange, yellow and some cases coral this flower appears on the Coat Of Arms. With references to this flower recorded as early as 1657, The Pride of Barbados can grow to heights of 10-15 feet. The flower has five petals, each being 1.5 inches in total. The fifth petal is by far smaller than the other four. The ten stamens are long and the pistils project from the centre of the flower. The branches of The Pride of Barbados have small thorns, and the leaves are doubly compound about one foot long and siz inches wide.
What is the national flower of your Country?
