How to get around in Barbados

The modes of transportation in Barbados may be a little different to what you're accustomed to. Most locals in Barbados will either drive a car or catch buses, mini buses, vans or Zr's. As a traveller you can either do any of the previously stated or catch a taxi. Below is a look into how you can get around Barbados while here on vacation!

How to get around in Barbados #1 Car Rental- Car rental is provided through several vehicle rental agencies with many different options from luxury cars to vans to mini mokes. Remember for Foreign drivers the authorities require a temporary Barbadian drivers licence in addition to an International licence. Companies such as Courtesy Rent a car, Direct Car Rentals, Voyager Rent a Car, and Drive-A-Matic make the job of renting cars easy! In our opinion, this method of transport gives you the most freedom while on vacation and you can get to alot of great places of interest not otherwise possible.

How to get around in Barbados #2 Public Transportation- Barbados Public Transport are buses, mini buses and vans. You would find these buses,mini- vans and Zr's in Speightstown, St.Peter; Oistins, Christ Church; River Vanstand, St.Michael; Fairchild Street Bus Terminal, and Princess Alice Bus Terminal, Cheapside,St.Michael. The Transport Board Buses are blue with yellow strips on each side. The location of the route is marked on the front of the bus. For example a bus marked Bridgetown, its going into our capital Bridgetown. The fare is $2BBD to any location islandwide.

How to get around in Barbados #3 Mini-Vans are privatly owned yellow buses with blue strips on the side. Just like the Public Transport buses they have their route on the front of the van.The conductor will also shout, for example "Oistins,Oistins!" which means their route is to Oistins.

How to get around in Barbados #4 ZRs (Zed R) - These are privately owned mini-vans run on specific predetermined routes. They are small and white with marroon strips on each side. With their distictive horn, you know a Zr is nearby. Locals and visitors alike love the thrill of driving in the Zrs.

How to get around in Barbados #5 Taxis- Most local companies offer luxury, small vans or coaches for groups. You can also find taxis situated across the island. There are two taxi stands in Bridgetown, there's one in Lower Broad Stree and Independence Square. Please ensure to ask the price first so to   avoid the risk of being overcharged.

I stayed in Barbados 3 times..and every time i used the public buses because they are simply perfect! The first time I also rented a car because i was in Dover Beach and i wanted to discover all the Island (especially Batsheeba and Bottom Bay) but for all the days and time public bus or mini van. This last are really funny especially for the turist: friend people, music and a lot of fun. Another reason for why I love Barbados!
Ps use the buses also for going ti the airport, taxi are cheap but with the bus: 2 BDS dollar and you will arrive safe and on time!

We would love to hear what you think.
