Discover: Cheapside Market Barbados
9th May, 2012We are ultimate foodies, when we travel there is nothing like experiencing that country’s cuisine. So as you can probably deduce, markets are a must on our travels. To see all the locals shopping for fresh, seasonal produce to prepare meals for their family and friends could not be more of an amazing cultural encounter. When you think of Barbados many people don’t think of food markets – at least not like ones such as St. Lawrence in Toronto or Union Square Greenmarket in New York. However, I am very pleased to announce that Barbados does have a market that can compete with these world-class establishments. It’s name – Cheapside Market.
Irresistibly atmospheric, Cheapside Market first opened in 1810, and is the one of the largest (and loudest) indoor markets in Barbados. Constantly overflowing with culture and charisma, the market is lined with parallel rows of vendors selling everything from spices, to whole pigs, to fresh coconut water. Located on Cheapside Road in Bridgetown, this market is full of wit, colour and let's not forget food! The locally grown produce and raised meats and poultry, continually contribute to our growing economy in addition to reducing green house gases. I mean, who wants to purchase imported produce when you can acquire them homegrown and fantastically fresh? I think the answer is pretty straightforward.
When you come to the island make sure you pay Cheapside market a visit and stock up on all your delicious locally grown and raised items. Saturday is market day and remember to get there early!
