Living Wild: The Green Parrot

10th June, 2014
Green Parrot or Rose-Ringed Parakeets in Barbados

As I was writing the title of this article it dawned on me, we have a heck of a lot of 'green' animals here in Barbados..the Green Monkey, the Green Lizard and now the Green Parrot. I remember when I attended St. Winifred's school in St.Michael as a child, every afternoon there would be a flock of Green Parrots flying overhead. It has been years since spotting them, until recently. A pair of Green Parrots were actually hanging out on a telephone line just outside my house! I was shocked to see them and quickly ran inside to get my camera (hoping of course by the time I got back outside they would not have flown off). Luck was on my side and I got a few snaps of them.

After a bit of research I discovered what in fact was outside my house were called Rose-Ringed Parakeets. These birds, as you can see from the image have a rose coloured ring around their necks, a pinkish beak and  yellowish-green plumage (hence why many locals just stick to "Green Parrot"). They really are beautiful birds and we would love to see the population increase here in Barbados, after all they are said to be very optimistic birds.

Just saw about 20-25 of these birds. Very beautiful and noisy. Hovering from tree to tree like hummingbirds. Came Gordon 10 min in my palms and now there gone

These green parrots are multiplying like crazy. I've seen lots of them in the Atlantic Shores area, the St. Lawrence/ Maxwell area and Francia, St. George. Would love to know the origin, nesting and reproductive habits of these birds.

These birds are beautiful! Emerald green, neon yellow under wing. I am trying to get photos clear enough to post. I have seen up to six at a time, two more frequently. They are noisy and pleasantly distracting. Today I got a better view of tail feathers. There are blue feathers in the center of the spread out tail. Will keep watching....

Over the past number of weeks I have seen up to a dozen of these beautiful birds at a time , in Heywoods St Peter . They appear to be feeding on an orange flowering tree or bush .....early in the morning. Looks quite distructive for the tree although a lovely sight over morning coffee.

We would love to hear what you think.
