Pudding and Souse in Barbados
30th July, 2012Pudding and Souse is just one of the things we Bajans like to do on Saturdays, it ingrained in our culture like the music we listen to or the way we speak. So now, let us take you over the basics, a typical plate of souse consists of pork (either lean strips or features), breadfruit, pudding (either sweet potato steamed or 'belly') and a cucumber pickle to drown all the goodness. One can usually receive wither a 1/2 portion for $7.50 or a full portion for BBD $12.00, however price varies from place to place. Pudding and Souse is best washed down with an ice cold beer, however this can be debatable as many prefer to eat their souse with rum and mix. Many travellers have heard about this pudding and souse business however have no clue where to get it and we must admit some of the places are beyond off the beaten track, usually in the homes of locals in Villages. However, there are two spots that are very well known where the pudding and souse is simple and authentic 1. Lemon Arbour and 2. Souse Factory both in the parish of St. John, Barbados.
So next time you are in Barbados be adventurous and get yourself a plate of pudding and souse, you won't regret it!
