In Season In Barbados: Avocados

Everyone longs for the end of the summer months here in Barbados for one reason - the abundance upon abundance of creamy, rich avocados. I mean who can resist them! I lived in Canada for three years and there were avocados year round, however none came even close to the complexity in flavor that a Bajan butter avocado has. Majority of Barbadians eat avocado either plain with a little salt or mix it with pickled cucumber (my favorite). Some even put the pickled cucumber and avocado in between a salt bread and make a cutter out of it!

Not only do avocados taste exquisite but they are also packed full of goodness with nutrients such as Potassium, Vitamin K, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, Pantothenic acid and on and on the list goes. It's funny how people say eating healthy does not taste good! Clearly they have never tried a Bajan butter avocado!

We love avocado. Barbados avocados are larger than what we were able to get in the states. How do they ripen?

We would love to hear what you think.
