Off the Beaten Track: Harrismith House

If you have ever explored the South East coast of the island, you may have come across this large house which is in ruin, perched upon a stunning cliff side. This house was formerly known as  Harrismith Hotel and is now locally known as Harrismith House. Even in its ruin, the mansion stands tall on the cliff with dramatic and breathtaking views just a look away. The Harrismith House has been said to be named after a town in South Africa which was founded by British Governor Sir Harry Smith. The mansion has been a backdrop and focus for many photographic opportunities such as photo shoots, tourist photos and family photos. 

If you do decide to visit Harrismith house, you can park your car near the house to explore the cliff side and you must go down to the stunning but secluded beach. Just about a minute's walk down a natural stone staircase will lead you to this "secret" beach. The beach is scattered with tall coconut trees which sway with the wind and the ocean crashes against the unimaginable white sands. We would not suggest you go swimming here as the sea can be rough and tumultuous. When the tide is low, small reef pools may appear which you can relax and wade in.
