Barbados in Bloom: Begonia
25th January, 2013Scattered across Barbados are these interestingly shaped and edible (yes you read that correctly) flowers called Begonias. Found mainly in the colours of pink, red, white and purple, Begonias blossom best in filtered sunlight (for example under trees) and prefer a combination of warmth and moisture. Many say that this flower originated in South America, however according to some sources, the Begonias grew abundantly in Haiti where the French botanist Charles Plumier travelled to study them and grant them their name (which was given to honour the Governor of Haiti at the time Michel Begon).
There are many spots in Barbados you can spot these flowering beauties however a few places in which you are guaranteed a sight are Hunte's Gardens and Fisherpond Great House.
