Barefoot on the Beach: Paynes Bay Barbados
24th October, 2012Located in the Parish of St. James, right opposite Beach View Hotel and just North of The Cliff Restaurant, is yet another breath-taking beach known as Paynes Bay. There are several entrances to the beach and chairs as well as umbrellas can be rented. The waters of Paynes Bay are calm and clear and therefore ideal for snorkeling and water sports such as jet skis, banana boats, and catamaran sailing.
Along with its beauty comes a little history. Paynes Bay is where the memorial site for the Cubana de Aviacion Flight 455 is located. On October 6th 1976 a flight which left Barbados and was headed for Jamaica was brought down by a terrorist attack. Sadly all 78 passengers on board were killed in then, what was the deadliest terrorist attack in the Western Hemisphere. A monument was erected at Paynes Bay in memory of the the individuals who were killed in the crash. This monument was visited several times by Fidel Castro along with many other Cuban and Venezuelan officials.
Take a stroll or spend the day - Paynes Bay should be on your 'to do list'.
