Discover: St. Mary’s Anglican Church Barbados

Beautiful and blessed is the land on which this amazing island is built. Its crystal clear beaches and white sandy shores, are filled with fantastic history and tales of long ago; of a country heavily routed in religion, spirituality and theology.

Located in the City of Bridgetown, on the lower end of Broad Street is the remarkable St. Mary’s Anglican Church. This beautiful structure with its distinctive red roof is constructed on the second oldest piece of consecrated ground in Barbados and has stood majestically in this spot for well over a century. St. Mary's Church currently occupies the site of the first city church, now known as St. Michael's Cathedral. The modest wooden Cathedral was built in 1641 and by 1665 was deemed inadequate and was on the verge of being relocated. However, the entire structure was destroyed by the great hurricane which hit Barbados in 1780.

The plot was left untouched for many years following this tragic natural disaster. It was not until 1825, that the then Government of Barbados decided to construct a much larger church on the vacant lot. Since its construction, The St. Mary’s Anglican Church has been a beacon of pride to the city of Bridgetown. It has held numerous services, weddings, funerals and baptisms and has been a sacred place of worship and fellowship for many Barbadians and tourists alike.  The beautiful Georgian architecture adds to the splendor of the amazing structure, making it a popular historic landmark for visitors to the island.
