Tips on selecting fresh fish in a Bajan Fish Market

Barbados is known for its fresh fish and local fishing villages seen all along the coasts. Many locals and now travelers are visiting these fishing villages and purchasing their own fish to cook. Just because you are buying from a fishing village does not necessarily mean the fish is fresh! Therefore, we decided to share a few tips on selecting fresh fish in Bajan Fish Market. Here are a few things to look out for when buying fresh fish in the market!

1.     Look at the fishes eyes to ensure they are not cloudy, the eyes should be bright and clear.

2.     Always ask the vendor when the fish was caught.

3.     Make sure there is no raw pungent smell from the fish but rather a smell of the sea

4.     Look at the gills carefully to ensure they are a bright red and not dull brick colour.

5.     Look for vibrant flesh and skin that is shiny and metallic.

6.     Ask the vendors to de-scale, bone and clean the fish to make preparation easier.

You must have fresh fish when you visit Barbados, whether you want to be adventurous and go buy your own or if you rather try fresh fish from Oistins Fish Fry! It is a must do when you visit our little rock!
