Holding onto Heritage: Baxter's Road

When the work day in Barbados is over and the weekend arrives, Baxter’s Road comes alive with culture, colour and cuisine.  It is the favourite place of many locals and visitors alike to get their mouth-watering, traditional Bajan food, and “lime” (hang out) with work colleagues, family and friends. Quaint rum shops, bakeries, and food stands line the street in Barbados’ capital, Bridgetown. There is always something for everyone at the lively Baxter’s Road, but the locally caught fresh fish is a must-try! Cooked on an open flame or in a traditional coal pot gives the fish that perfect, rustic 'Bajan' flavour. Baxter’s Road has become the place to eat, adding authenticity to every bite. If you dare stick around the wee hours of the morning you will find the party is still going. Many people have actualy compared Baxter's Road to the back streets of New Orleans in the 1930's, with nearly every bar being operated by a 'mama'. In addition, Baxter's Road is filled with historic value and many arichitectual treasures of the days gone by. The delicious food and vibrant atmosphere at Baxter’s Road create the perfect setting to experience traditional Bajan culture.
