Restaurant Review: Zen at The Crane Barbados
21st June, 2013Before Zen, many Barbadians did not know what sushi really was or rather was actually composed of. Commencing around the same time sushi became a ‘trendy’ food in the Western hemisphere, Zen produced rolls that were authentic and not to mention first-class! At present, both local and international palettes are more sophisticated than ever and as a result sushi’s popularity continues to soar. Once Zen was the only sushi restaurant on the Island, but is now one amongst many. However, by our rankings it is hands down one of the best if not THE best in Barbados.Your first impression of the restaurant is not like many, with great attention to the Asian-inspired architecture and interior decor. This is not a surprise as The Crane Resort certainly places structural design at its forefront in planning. The dramatic setting, complete with an all-glass frontage offers ‘out of this world views of the famous Crane Beach. A 12-person sushi bar, private traditional styled Japanese booths and large Tatami room with a recessed floor which present an option for private dining all in all create an atmosphere of ultimate Asian-styled sophistication.
Now on to the sushi - (just a little note, Zen also offers Thai delicacies but we decided to stick to the sushi) which was as expected, exquisite. We shared the Spicy Tuna Maki, the Spider Maki and the Philadelphia Maki.
Starting with the Spider which was composed of flying fish roe, cucumber, avocado and soft shell crab. This Maki was bite sized rolls of heaven. The crunchy and flavourful deep-fried crab is beautifully juxtaposed by the creaminess of the avocado and freshness of the cucumber. The flying fish roe (or tobiko) added a wonderful element of salty/nutty flavour to the overall Maki roll.
The spicy tuna roll, which is a classic Maki that you can find at most sushi-serving establishments, contains flying fish roe, cucumber, green onion and tuna. The green onion added a subtle bite to the creamy and fresh tasting tuna; and the cucumber added a slight crunch which balanced out every taste.
The Philadelphia includes cream cheese, smoked salmon, cucumber, flying fish roe and onion. Philadelphia is one of the creamiest rolls around due to the large amounts of cream cheese; what better combination than smoked salmon and creamy Philadelphia cheese right? The salmon, which has a slight smoky and salty flavor is rounded out brilliantly by freshness of the cucumber and the sharp bite of the onion.
As mentioned above, Zen is both a Japanese and Thai Restaurant and it is no wonder that it was rated #1 restaurant in Barbados by Zagat.
