Upwards and Onwards: National Flag

To celebrate Barbados' Independence we will be providing you with little bits about our island. Today we will be talking about the National Flag and all its meaning. I am sure you have seen Barbados' flag but may not know the insight behind the representation. Our flag is comprised of three vertical panels with a gold panel in the middle and two outer aquamarine panels and the broken trident in the centre. The gold panel represents our island's stunning sands along all the beaches we have, the aquamarine panel represents the sea and sky of beautiful Barbados and the broken trident is to show that we have broken away from Britian and we are an independent nation.

Here are a few rules for displaying the flag:

• Our National Flag should be flown from government buildings every day from 6:00AM-6:00PM.
• The  Barbados National Flag is flown at half mast when in mourning.
• The Barbados National Flag should not be allowed to touch anything beneath it when flown. 
•  The Barbados National Flag should never be flown with the trident inverted except as a sign of distress.
