Restaurant Review: Juma's Restaurant
22nd January, 2014As we were exploring the northern side of the island we stumbled upon this restaurant in Speightstown called Juma's. From roadside, you may not even notice it, but as you walk up the stairs and enter the restaurant and bar you will be completely taken back at the view it offers, quite a difference to the roadside! Juma’s has a very Caribbean feel with African inspired décor intertwined. It exudes a very wholesome and natural vibe with elements such as tree trunks used as the base of the tables, dried coconut leaves lined the rooftop and plants and greenery scattered across the restaurant. The African inspired batik pieces, colourful art and intricate sculptures create and tell a very interesting story which is great fun to try and interpret.
To start at Juma's Restaurant and Bar we had Bajan saltfish cakes and chicken liver pate. The fish cakes were crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside, served with sweet chili sauce for a little kick! The chicken liver pate was hearty and paired perfectly with organic sorrel jam which was served on top! The sorrel jam was a lovely addition to the dish and really pulled it all together. Both starters had a fresh salad dressed with homemade honey mustard vinaigrette. These dishes got our appetite going!
For the main course, we went for fried flying fish and chips along with Thai Red Curry Shrimp served on a bed of Noodles. The flying fish was fried in a thin batter and served with thick cut chips. The curry was very tasty, however not your traditional Caribbean Curry. It was made with red curry and had red peppers, parsley, basil and of course jumbo shrimp which were cooked perfect to perfection. A bite of cilantro was present which did a wonderful job of balancing the whole meal.
With this view, scrumptious lunch and a nice breeze blowing, we would have to say Juma’s is a great lunch spot hidden away!
