Restaurant Review: Fisherman's Pub and Grub
15th January, 2014A little ways away, from the North of the island, in the small locale of Speightstown you can find one of the most authentic Barbadian experiences on the island. I am talking about Fisherman’s Pub and Grub. It is a small, cozy, simple, no frills restaurant and bar that serves up genuine Bajan cuisine. Located right on the seaside, you can enjoy a great Bajan lunch or dinner whilst looking onto the gorgeous ocean, with the Speightstown pier in view.
As you enter this establishment, your eyes are met with a diversity of Bajan cuisine, all of which you can freely choose from. It may be quite intimidating at first but thats why we are here, to point out the top food choices that you must try when you visit Fisherman’s Pub and Grub. We had 2 plates of authentic Bajan food, which was mouthwatering good. We had the famous Barbadian fried flying fish with cornmeal cou cou and gravy, peas and rice and fish melts (a Bajan delicacy). The other plate consisted of BBQ pork, macaroni pie, plantain and buttered cassava. Well as you may know already, cou cou and flying fish is Barbados’ national dish and remember to ask for some gravy on your cou cou! The cou cou melts in your mouth and has a polenta type consistency. The flying fish was perfectly fried and very flavourful from the Bajan seasoning, which was used to marinate it. We also suggest that you try the flying fish melts if they are available when you visit. The macaroni pie and the buttered cassava pair perfectly with your fish or pork and compliment each other. The sweetness from the plantain tones down the pepper and heat from the meats and it a great balance when eaten altogether.
We sat on the outside wooden patio to enjoy our Bajan meal and take in the salt air and warmth. The patio is furnished with mini wooden picnic benches with umbrellas, little tables and chairs. You don’t have to sit like us, as the locals were up and about dancing and enjoying the music. On a whole, Fisherman’s Pub and Grub is one of the most authentic Barbadian restaurants you can come across and why not venture down to Speightstown? You can explore the town before your lunch, from the Arlington Museum to various unique art galleries and even a antique shop full of character. I am sure you will work up an appetite after your adventures, but beware after a full Bajan meal you may get “itis” (a feeling of tiredness and wanting to just relax and not do much)! Nonetheless, it is definitely worth it!
