Gineps or as we say Bajan Ackees
19th September, 2012If you happen to be in Barbados during the summer months you may notice street-side vendors selling bunches of vibrant green grape like looking fruit. These vendors are usualy randomly located on highways and roundabouts (trust us you won't miss them). The fruits we talk of are what Bajans call Ackees, however they are more commonly known as gineps. Bajan ackees or Gineps are often confused with the Jamacian Ackee which is entirely different. Bajan ackees are eaten as a snack and have a tough dry exterior. However, once that is cracked there is a soft and slightly sweet peach pulp which is sucked off the stone seed. Some describe the bajan ackee as a cross between a grape and a lychee.
As with anything you are eating, take caution when snacking on Bajan Ackees or Gineps as the stone seed can be hazarous if it slips down your throat.
