Get Your Surf on While in Barbados - Freights
24th July, 2012Over the past years surfing in Barbados has become quite a trend, both for those experienced and new to the sport. For those of you who are avid surfers, the East Coast of Barbados is perfect with Bathsheba, and Cattlewash having waves almost year round. However, we are here today to speak about a break which is ideal for learners and those new to the exciting and adrenaline pumping sport (most days of the year). Freights break, located on the South coast of the island just above Oistins Town, is soft as well as one of the longest left breaks in Barbados therefore making it perfect for long-boarders, beginners and even Stand Up Paddle Boarders. Additionally, what adds safety is that the waves break in about 4-5 feet of water with the bed being mostly sand and soft reef (we don't want any cuts and grazes from sharp rocks do we?)
So how do you get there? One of the easiest ways is to rent a car, drive through Oistins until you come to a Y, continue right. Take the second right and follow the road until you arrive at a T junction. Turn left, follow the road and take the next right into a residential area called Atlantic Shores. Continue and in about 100 Meters you will arrive at a small public entrance (on the right) where you can park and make you way down the cliff face (there are steps). Happy Surfing!
