Off the Beaten Track: Conset Bay, Barbados
17th September, 2012As you travel through the Eastern side of Barbados, there are several small and neatly hidden bays that many do not even know exist. One of these bays which sits on the rugged but surreal East coast is Conset Bay. Located in the parish of St. John, this sheltered bay is not the easiest find, however once you arrive you are surrounded by nature at its very finest. Conset Bay is predominantly known as a fishing bay which becomes obvious as you descend the winding hill leading to the coast. The ornately designed fishing boats bob up and down in the bay anxious to set sail over the seas. What makes this bay even better is that you can purchase the fresh catch of the day from the small fish market located on the shore of Conset Bay.
Conset Bay is considered to be one of the more quiescent bays on the East coast of Barbados, nonetheless you must still be cautious when swimming (it is best to stay in an area where you can stand up). Depending on the currents and swells, Conset Bay can be calm one day and on another have waves and relatively strong undertows. With all the local fisherman going about their daily work, the warm waters surrounded by green hills and the local boats scattered in the sea, Conset Bay is perfect if you are looking to experience an 'off the beaten track' local beach community in Barbados.
