Holding on to Heritage: The First House with a Light

9th July, 2012
South Point Light House Barbados

Located on the Southern point of Barbados is the oldest light-house on the island – South Point Light House. It was brought to Barbados in 1852, one year after being shown in London’s Great exhibition. With its red and white bands, this lighthouse can be spotted from many areas on the island and can be reached by following the signs through the residential district of Atlantic shores. While South Point Light House is still open to the public; the tower itself is closed. Nonetheless, South Point Light house has impressed as it was depicted on the reverse of the 5-cent coin since 1973.
