Discover: East Point Lighthouse

5th April, 2016
East Point Lighthouse Barbados

Located in the beautiful parish of St. Philip is the third oldest lighthouse ever to be erected in Barbados. East point lighthouse, or Ragged Point as it is most commonly known, is located upon a cliff top at the most easterly point in Barbados. This quaint little look out spot is a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike as it offers an outstanding view of the beautiful East Coast. The view from this cliff top is absolutely majestic; the rugged coastlines and turbulent Atlantic Ocean come together to create an unforgettable experience. On a clear day from this spot you can see as far north as Pico Teneriffe in St. Peter and Cove Bay in St Lucy. The lighthouse which was erected on May 1st 1875 stands at a magnificent 200 ft. above sea level. The structure of the lighthouse is made entirely of coral stone and is seen as Barbados’ most significant lighthouse to date. It was once responsible for protecting sailors from the raging Atlantic coastline, where twenty-two shipwrecks were recorded during the fifty years preceding its construction. Although the lighthouse is now closed to the public, it is still possible to visit the structure and observe its magnificence. This is a perfect spot for taking plenty photos or just taking in the view.
